Syllabus ( 2017-2018)

Dear Parents and Students:

Welcome to 9th,10 grade Social Studies, and 8th grade Health. Here are a few expectations and tips that I believe will help you be successful this year:

We will be using the McGraw-Hill textbook for Social Studies and Health. All the material covered in class is in the textbook. Please keep it covered and bring it to class daily.

Our class is approximately 45 minutes long. Expect homework at least three nights a week. I will try to give you as much time in class as possible, but we won’t be able to get it all done in that short time. You won’t have homework on Fridays or other game days. Your homework shouldn’t take longer than 30 min. I don’t intend for it to interfere with your family time, but it is necessary to practice Social Studies and Health. If you need homework help and can stay after school (3:45-4:30), I am at school until 4:30 every day except Fridays and will help you with homework. I will assign mandatory tutorials as needed. Mandatory tutorials will be at 7:15 A.M OR 3:45 P.M. Feel free to stay for help anytime!

If you have any questions, you may contact me at the High School at 754-5516 or e-mail me at jerry.awalt@wintersisd.org

MAKEUP WORK

Makeup Work Because of Absence

For any class missed, the teacher may assign the student makeup work based on the instructional objectives for the subject or course and the needs of the individual student in mastering the essential knowledge and skills or in meeting subject or course requirements.

A student will be responsible for obtaining and completing the makeup work for absences.

For excused absences the student will be allowed 1 day for every day missed to complete the worked missed and 2 calendar days for extracurricular activities. Students with missing assignments will be required to attend after school tutorials until all missing work is completed. Student assignments that are turned in 1 day late, without granted permission from the teacher, and no absence has occurred will be assigned a maximum grade of 70. After 2 days the assignment will be assigned a maximum grade of 50.

A student is encouraged to speak with his or her teacher if the student knows of an absence ahead of time, including absences for extracurricular activities, so that the teacher and student may plan any work that can be completed before or shortly after the absence.

Please remember the importance of student attendance at school and that, even though absences may be excused or unexcused, all absences account for 90 percent threshold in regards to the state laws surrounding "attendance for credit or final grade."
